This page describes what Measure holds and why, in plain English. It sits alongside the Terms of Service, which is the binding document; where the two touch the same subject, the Terms govern.

What we measure is a place, not a person

Measure is a measurement service for buildings and the ground around them. Our subject is a property. We are not in the business of profiling the people who live at one, and the Terms of Service forbid using the service to harass, surveil or profile individuals.

Our measurements are computed from public data about the physical world. We do not need — and do not ask for — anything about the occupants of a property in order to measure it.

What an address lookup stores

When you look up an address, we store:

• The address or coordinate you asked about, so that the lookup can run, so the result can be shown back to you, and so we can bill correctly for what was measured.
• The building we identified and the measurements we computed, so that a report you paid for can be re-opened rather than re-run, and so we can tell when our own answers change.
• A usage record — what was called, when, and by which account. Usage is metered and billed, so this is the record that makes a bill checkable. Your own consumption is available to you at any time.

Note the obvious thing: an address can be a home. If you look up where somebody lives, we hold that address against your account. Treat that the way you would want it treated.

What an account stores

If you sign in or buy something, we hold your email address, and — as section 8 of the Terms sets out — the version of the Terms you accepted together with the time and IP address of acceptance. That last one exists so that agreement to the accuracy disclaimer is an event we can point at, rather than an assumption.

Payments are taken by our payment processor. Card numbers are handled by them and never reach us; what we see is the fact of a payment and what it was for.

What we do not do

• We do not sell personal data. Not your email, not your account details, not the list of addresses you looked up.
• We do not sell or share your lookup history with other customers, and one account's queries are not visible to another.
• We do not run advertising, retargeting or cross-site tracking. There are no ad-network pixels on this site and we do not follow you around other websites. We do use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages get read, which sets its own cookies for that purpose. The signed-in console sets the cookies it needs to keep you signed in.
• We do not build profiles of the residents of the properties measured. We do not have that data and do not want it.

Retention, honestly

We keep what is described above for as long as we need it to run, bill and improve the service, and we have not fixed a published retention period for every category — saying otherwise would be a commitment we have not made. What we can say concretely:

• Usage and billing records are kept while an account exists and afterwards for as long as we may need to account for money that changed hands.
• Stored measurements and reports exist so you can re-open what you paid for. Some artefacts are pruned oldest-first as storage fills, so an old one may no longer be retrievable.
• You can ask us to delete your account and what is attached to it. Write to team@measure.so and we will tell you what we hold and what we removed, including anything we are obliged to keep and why.

Who else sees it

Measure runs on third-party hosting, and uses third-party services for sign-in, payment, email delivery and website analytics. They process data on our instructions in order to provide those functions. Beyond that, we disclose data only where the law requires it.

Some of the open data used in producing Measure outputs carries license conditions, including attribution. Those conditions and the credits they require are listed on the data attribution page.

Changes, and how to reach us

If this page changes materially we will update it here; continued use after a change constitutes acceptance, in the same way section 9 of the Terms describes. Questions, corrections and deletion requests all go to team@measure.so.
